Minutes of the Board of Trustees of the New York Ophthalmic and Aural Institute. The Trustees were primarily concerned with the financial and administrative affairs of the Institute, but especially in the early years of the hospital they often reported on medical matters including number of admissions, the condition of the wards, and the appointment of medical staff.
History and Biography
The New York Ophthalmic and Aural Institute was founded in 1869 by Dr. Herman Knapp (1832-1911) and was located at 44-46 East 12th Street in Greenwich Village. In 1913, the hospital was renamed the Herman Knapp Memorial Hospital and moved to new facilities at Tenth Avenue and 57th Street. The Hospital closed on January 1, 1940 and its assets were turned over to Columbia University as the Knapp Memorial Fund to support ophthalmological research.

A few loose papers found in the volumes have been transferred to Miscellaneous Manuscripts, Box 4, folder 13. They consist of routine correspondence dated 1888, 1892 (4 items); and a draft of the Board minutes of May 22, 1894 with an attached medical report for Jan. – May of that year.
