Historical/Biographical Note:

Associate Deans, of which there were usually several at any given time, assisted the Dean of the College of Physicians & Surgeons in managing the affairs of the medical school. The office was first established in the early 20th century. Associate Deans often, though not invariably, were responsible for a specific area such as admissions or postgraduate education.

Scope and Content:

Records created by the Office of Associate Dean for Postgraduate Education during the tenure of Dr. José M. Ferrer, 1973-1982. The records document Ferrer’s investigations into possible residency opportunities at hospitals with which P&S was discussing affiliation agreements. The records provide a snapshot of the state of medical postgraduate training and education at a diverse group of community hospitals in the metropolitan New York area.

Materials for each hospital vary widely but may include correspondence; Ferrer’s notes on his visits; questionnaires; and hospital publications, including newsletters and annual reports. The best-documented hospital here is Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. with which P&S forged an affiliation that is still in effect as of the writing of this guide.
