Psychoanalyst and Shakespeare authority, died in New York City. He was an advocate of socialized medicine, and one of the earliest doctors to practice psychoanalysis. Although he had studied under Freud, he frequently disagreed with Freudian teachings. The author of more than fifty books on Shakespeare, he had lectured on Shakespeare and Elizabethan literature at Columbia, the University of Chicago and City College, and had taught Shakespeare at Hunter College for fifteen years.
