Annual Reports of the President

The annual reports of the President of Columbia University include reports of all the schools of the University.  For annual reports of the Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons before our digital copies begin in 1931, researchers will find an abbreviated version in the President's reports.   Additional reports can also be found for the Deans of schools of dentistry, pharmacy, and tropical medicine as they are established.  Archives & Special Collections lacks reports for 1893 or any after 1946.

College of Dental Medicine/School of Dental & Oral Surgery/School of Dentistry/College of Dental & Oral Surgery of New York (CODOS)

Founded as the School of Dentistry, 1916; merged in 1923 with the College of Dental & Oral Surgery of New York (founded 1892) and renamed School of Dental & Oral Surgery; became College of Dental Medicine, 2006.

Yearbooks

The earliest yearbooks, 1908-1922, are from the College of Dental and Oral Surgery of New York (CODOS). It isn’t known if CODOS published yearbooks for the years not represented here.The first Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery yearbook in our collection is 1928.  Our holdings are missing 1929-30, 1943-46, and 1949. Because of funding constraints, 1992 was the last year digitized.

Mailman School of Public Health

Opened in 1922 as the Delamar Institute of Public Health; renamed School of Public Health, July 1, 1945; name changed to School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine, July 1, 1955; renamed School of Public Health, c.1973. Became Mailman School of Public Health in 1998.

The Mailman School of Public Health does not seem to have published yearbooks except for the years 1956-1967 and even that period has gaps. All the yearbooks currently held by Archives & Special Collections have been digitized.

School of Nursing/Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing

Founded as the Presbyterian Hospital Training School for Nurses, 1892; renamed Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, c.1904; became Dept. of Nursing of the Columbia University Faculty of Medicine, 1937; School of Nursing, 1974.

There appear to have been no School of Nursing yearbooks before 1936.  It is not known if editions were published in 1938-39, 1941, and 1986 or whether these are simply missing from the set in Archives & Special Collections.  None seem to have been published in 1943-45.  1987 seems to have been the last yearbook published.

Institute of Cancer Research

Founded in 1908 with a $50,000 donation from railroad millionaire George W. Crocker, the Institute was originally known as the Crocker Special Research Fund or, more usually, the Crocker Institute. The name was changed to the Institute of Cancer Research sometime before 1930.  It is the ancestor of today's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.  Archives & Special Collections has a very incomplete run of Director's reports; however, a section on the Institute can usually be found in the annual reports of the Dean of the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
